How to issue prescriptions online?

How to issue online prescriptions
The obligation to issue prescriptions online came into effect in Poland on January 8, 2020. Since then, doctors are required to issue e-prescriptions, and patients must use them at pharmacies to purchase medications. In this article, we’ve gathered essential information on how to issue online prescriptions and how patients can order them conveniently.
What are e-prescriptions?
An e-prescription is a digital version of a traditional paper prescription. In practice, it allows patients to easily purchase medications at any pharmacy. Each e-prescription contains essential details, including:
- patient data (including PESEL number),
- e-prescription code,
- prescription number,
- expiration date,
- medication name and quantity,
- dosage instructions,
- doctor’s details,
- reimbursement information (if applicable).
This solution is highly convenient — e-prescriptions can be issued during a teleconsultation, with no need for an in-person visit. It saves time and accelerates the entire process. Additionally, the patient’s prescription history is stored in the Internet Patient Account (IKP), which can be accessed at any time. One of the biggest advantages of e-prescriptions is that they can’t be lost or forged. The patient can simply log in to their IKP to retrieve the code or request it via SMS.
Issuing an online prescription via the e-health platform – step by step
How does a doctor issue an online prescription? The procedure is very straightforward. The doctor must be connected to the P1 system, which is the responsibility of the medical facility or the individual practitioner running a private practice. Once connected, the doctor navigates to the e-prescription module. After a medical consultation, the doctor selects the appropriate medication(s) and adds them to the prescription. It is then signed using a digital validation tool. Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process:
- Connect to the P1 System,
- Access the e-prescription module (may require a software update),
- Select the medication(s) to be prescribed,
- Sign the e-prescription using one of the following:
-
ZUS certificate,
-
Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany),
-
Qualified Electronic Signature,
-
- Provide the patient with the prescription code or a PDF printout.
Issuing an online prescription via the gabinet.gov.pl App – step by step
E-prescriptions can also be issued through the official portal: https://gabinet.gov.pl — an alternative to the e-Health system. The doctor logs into the platform using a Trusted Profile, online banking, or e-ID (e-dowód). Steps to issue a prescription:
- Log in as a doctor and select the medical facility from which the e-prescription is being issued,
- Add the patient to the system using their PESEL number,
- Fill out the online prescription, including the medication name, dosage, and any special instructions,
- Sign the prescription using:
-
ZUS certificate,
-
Qualified Electronic Signature,
-
Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany),
-
- Approve the e-prescription,
- Provide the patient with the 4-digit access code or a PDF printout of the prescription.
The e-prescription can be filled at any pharmacy. To do so, the patient simply provides their PESEL number and the online prescription code.
How can a patient order an e-prescription?
You already know how a doctor can issue an e-prescription. Now let’s check whether a patient can place an online order for their chosen medications. It turns out they can. In the case of chronic illnesses and long-term medication use, a patient can request a prescription renewal. To do so, they simply need to visit the portal http://pacjent.gov.pl/, log in to the mojeIKP application, contact their doctor by phone, use the electronic patient registration system, or visit the medical office in person. Prescribing new medications requires a medical visit or a teleconsultation. This ensures the highest standard of healthcare is maintained. A doctor should have full oversight of the medications a patient is taking. Any doubts in this regard should always be consulted with the physician.
